When I first started my business, a big part of my vision was being able to work from home, so I could take care of my family. I imagined myself getting my baby off to sleep and then sitting down at my computer to get some work done. I even created a Spotify playlist of lullaby type songs for this imaginary baby.
About 6 months later, I was looking after my niece Mya and she hadn’t been feeling too well. As my office also doubles as our spare room, I tucked Mya into the spare bed and got on with some work. I even put the playlist on to help negate the sound of my typing! ?
It struck me, in that moment, that I had created exactly what I wanted for myself! I was able to help my family because I worked from home. The fact that I work for myself was the reason I was looking after Mya in the first place.
Because of the flexibility that working for myself gives me, I’ve been able to support my family beyond what I had imagined. I’ve been able to help out with the school run, go to Harvest Festivals and attend school fetes. I’ve been able to stay with my sister in Scotland after she gave birth to both her babies because I could take my work with me and do things on my schedule.
Plus I get to show the kids a different way of working and share what I do with them. Mya’s now started school and she still loves to come up to my office and sit at my desk to practice her typing. (She’s just starting to learn all the letters and spelling things out loud, so it’s a joy to see the skills she’s developing) She also likes it when I spin her in my chair, so it’s not all work!
Freedom, Flexibility and Fun are the three keywords in Leila Williams Virtual Assistant and I see this echoed in my relationships with all the kids in my life. I’m so lucky to be Auntie Leila to so many incredible little (and not so little) people.
